L5R is pretty good. I guess it puts players in classes, but then there's only 6 classes: Bushi (warriors), Shugenja (wizard priests), Ninja, Courtiers, Monks, and Artisans. But, instead of choosing "The Bushi Class," as you would in D&D, instead you pick a clan and take that clan's Bushi School, which is utterly unique from another clan' s school.
